Martial Arts
I have completed my martial arts course in school. It went on for the duration of two full school days. At first I was extremely excited about it not only because I got to wear my tracksuit into school but because I had never participated in an activity similar to martial arts training. Unfortunately I was unable to attend the theory section of the course as I had an appointment however I got to get straight into the action when I arrived. As soon as I arrived I learned some basic palm strikes and applied them by hitting a punching bag. I learned striking with an open palm is just as effective as punching with a closed fist however striking with a palm won’t damage your hand meanwhile striking with a close fist will likely lead to injury. This information was new to me and I found it very intriguing. We then learnt some basic elbow, knee and hammer fist strikes which we then added together to make a combo to defend ourselves from an aggressor.
At the end of day one we learnt some basic blocks aswell as some kicks. The day ended but we would be getting straight back into it at a quarter to nine the next morning. We started the day off with some ground defence. I didn’t expect it but I learnt that fighting on the ground is physically draining. After thirty seconds of practicing on the ground with one of my classmates and I was out of breath. This was useful as I know if I’m ever in a tricky situation I shouldn’t take the fight to the ground as I will become very tired. After the ground fighting we went on to some basic weapon defense which was good fun but may be applicable to real life scenarios.
All in all it was a vauluable workshop as I feel much more confident in defending myself.
